Atkinson Vos Buying Advice

With such a wide choice of models available, selecting the best one for your range of jobs is important. The first consideration is the maximum diameter of timber likely to be fed into the machine. It is recommended that the largest models are used with cranes.

Maximum Capacities

Garden Range = 100mm/4ins

Park Range = 160mm/6.5ins to 250mm/10ins

Forest Range = 230mm/9ins to 400mm/16ins

We advise that, if possible, you choose a model that has a slightly greater capacity than your expected maximum. This ensures that your woodchipper operates well within its capabilities contributing to extended service life and lower maintenance costs.

The second consideration is whether you need a towed trailer model or vehicle mounted PTO model. This will be determined mainly by the type of vehicle you use alongside the chipper.

The third consideration is whether to use a fixed platform or turntable model. The turntable models give greater flexibility in operating conditions, allowing chip ejection into vehicle mounted chip boxes, onto the ground at either side, the rear or into adjacent chip boxes on other vehicles.

Where PTO models are chosen, it is vital to ensure that there is sufficient PTO power to meet the model's minimum requirement. Ideally, there should be more PTO power available than the minimum required as PTO power drops off sharply as engine revs reduce under strain. Constantly using maximum in-feed capacity with only the minimum required PTO power will result in poorer performance and increased strain on the woodchipper and vehicle.

Finally, keeping all wearable components in top condition and properly adjusted will ensure the best possible performance.
